The journey to realizing flawless skin is fraught with confusing messages, over-hyped health and beauty ads, and struggles with consistency for following a skin care regimen. We all dream about having clear skin and a radiant complexion, and there is no shortage of health and beauty products to help us get there. But how do we know what will work well for our unique needs and skin conditions.

Is there a secret formula for achieving flawless skin? There is not, but there are specific steps you can take to promote a healthier skin tone and a clear complexion.

The methods for achieving clear skin will differ somewhat depending on your skin type. But recently, dermatologists have been recommending more kindness in our regimens. From products to practices, here are our eight suggestions for getting flawless skin.

8 Ways You Can Achieve Flawless Skin

1) Use Gentle Cleansing Devices

While exfoliation is vital to wash away dead skin cells, there are some devices that tend to be too abrasive and could actually harm your skin. For example, tools like rough sponges, washcloths, or loofahs may be harsh for your skin, and could damage your skin and cause skin irritation.

Some other more gentle devices may be just what your skin needs to achieve a flawless complexion. You might consider delicate options such as soft cleansing brushes. You could also prevent skin irritation by using your clean fingers to massage a cleanser onto your face.

2) Apply Moisturizer

You might be wondering how a moisturizer could be an effective way to achieve a glowing complexion. If your skin is quite dry, your skin is likely to react to this condition by overproducing oil. That typically leads to breakouts.

By keeping your face moisturized, you will better control sebum production and shield your skin from the outside elements.

Similar to cleansers, moisturizers don’t necessarily have to be expensive or filled with sophisticated ingredients.  Instead, seek out a moisturizer that is non-comedogenic.  That means it will not clog your pores.

For those of you who have oily skin, we recommend you use moisturizers labeled “lightweight” so you will avoid being left with a heavy, greasy feeling.

3) Exfoliate

Exfoliating is a highly effective way to achieve flawless skin. It assists in removing dead skin cells. If those cells remain on your skin for too long a period of time, they will clog your pores and result in breakouts.

Your complexion will also suffer with the accumulation of dead skin cells.  Your face would look dull, flaky, or prematurely aged.

Be sure to use the right facial scrub that is ideal for your skin type and do a facial scrub two to three times a week to maintain clear skin. For those of you who have dry or sensitive skin, it is best to apply a soft, nonabrasive, creamy exfoliator two times a week.

Consider these exfoliation methods to clear away dry and dead skin:

Ø  A 10 percent or less glycolic acid mask or lotion

Ø  A motorized facial brush

Ø  A 2 percent salicylic acid mask

As for how often you should use an exfoliant, for physical exfoliants, such as brushes or scrubs, shoot for three to four times per week. For chemical exfoliants, like lotions or masks, try regularly per week.

4) Always Wear Sunscreen

The sun’s ultraviolet rays can significantly damage your skin. These harmful rays can cause oil glands to become overactive, and that will probably lead to acne breakouts.

In order to prevent breakouts, we suggest you opt for an oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen and apply plenty of it on your skin.

Wearing sunscreen is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your skin’s appearance and keep it healthy no matter how old you are. When used regularly, sunscreen will help to prevent skin cancer, sunburn, and premature aging.

For daily use, you’ll want to select a sunscreen with an SPF of, at minimum, 30. If you tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, opt for sunscreen that has a SPF of 60 or higher.

5) Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the most important ways you can give yourself flawless skin. In fact, skin cells that are dehydrated are much more likely to become stuck in your pores. Maintaining good skin hydration is key to warding off breakouts and clearing your skin of acne.

By consuming many ounces of water each day, you are quenching from the inside out, and this helps to keep your face supple and soft. Also, drinking large quantities of water will help keep your skin cells healthy.

6) Apply an Acne-Fighting Agent

There are many topical therapies that will successfully combat acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, (AAD).  What is important in the search for the right topical therapy is knowing the type of acne you have.

The AAD recommends these topical therapies (while keeping in mind your acne type):

Comedonal Acne (Blackheads and similar Bumps):  You should obtain products that are infused with retinoids such as adapalene gel;

Mild Acne:  If you have a lighter case of acne, you may want to use topical benzoyl peroxide, which is quite effective.  You could also combine topical benzoyl peroxide with a topical retinoid;

Inflammatory Acne:  What is recommended for this type of acne is topical dapsone, 5 percent gel. It is especially helpful for adult woman.

Acne with Scarring:  You will find that azelaic acid preparations will likely decrease your acne, along with the risks of acne scarring.

For those of you who would like to target various types of acne at the same time, the AAD  recommends using a combination of benzoyl peroxide, adapalene gel or tretinoin.

7) Get Enough Sleep

It is as simple as just getting seven or more hours of sleep to help ensure you have ultra-healthy and flawless skin.  If you don’t have sufficient sleep, you run the risk of experiencing acne breakouts.

According to a study carried out in 2015, more than 65 percent of the study’s participants who said they were tired also had acne.

Authors of this study speculated that not having enough sleep, in some cases, could cause the body to release inflammatory compounds. It is these compounds that might cause the skin to break out or exacerbate acne.

For healthy skin, you should strive for seven to nine hours of quality sleep every night.

8) Eat a Healthy Diet

When you eat a healthy diet consisting of foods that are rich in nutrients it benefits your whole body, and that includes your skin. Strive to maintain a diet that contains plant foods and lean protein sources, as these nutrients will keep your skin healthy and promote a clear complexion.

In addition to adding certain foods, eliminating specific troublesome foods will also help you achieve healthy skin. For example, stay away from dairy milk. There was a review conducted in Clinical Nutrition that revealed a positive relationship between milk and acne. Some medical researchers think this connection is due to the growth compounds and hormones that the milk contains.

Treat Your Skin with Kindness

Above all, try to view a new skin care routine through a prism of kindness. It goes a long way when it comes to bringing out your natural beauty. It should definitely influence what products you use in your daily skin care regimen.
