Summer is finally on the horizon. The days are getting warmer, and longer. Before you know it, it’ll be time to show a lot more skin. But your skin may not be entirely ready for the warmer, dryer weather of summer.

Before you ditch the winter sweater for an off-the-shoulder blouse, think about how you should change your skin-care routine. As you experience the transition of the seasons, there are certain steps you need to take to ensure your skin will be ready for dramatic weather and atmospheric changes that we’re in store for once summer arrives.

Just as you switch your clothes when the temperatures rise, you can also switch up your skin-care in ways that include changing up your facial cleanser, moisturizer, and face mask routines.

Let’s create a plan to get your skin ready to spring into summer.

7 Ways to Get Your Skin Prepared for Summer

1) Exfoliate

Consider that your skin has probably spent weeks and even months hibernating under warm garments like wool sweaters.  Your skin is in dire need of exfoliating. We suggest using a body mitt or grainy scrub to help your skin be restored to a smoother state.  Slough all over your skin using gentle, circular motions. Do this twice a week. This will eliminate pore clogging and dead skin cells.

You will want to invest in an exfoliating scrub that uses all natural ingredients, such as salt – not beads – and sugar. It is best to apply the exfoliating scrub all over your face and body while you are in the shower. It might be a good idea to utilize a gentle exfoliating scrub on the skin that is thinner, like on the face, neck, and chest.

Continue this routine throughout the summer, as this is especially useful to rid your skin of sunscreen and oil.  An added plus of exfoliating is that it makes your skin more receptive to moisturizer and makes it possible to absorb self-tanner more evenly.

2) Moisturize Heavily

Just as you become more thirsty during warmer weather, your skin does as well. Moisturize in the morning and again at night as we approach summer. By using plentiful amounts of moisturizer, your tans will last longer, and your skin will appear fresher.

You will probably need to use a richer cream to ensure that your skin stays adequately hydrated. Consider using a water-based moisturizer with a matte finish. A moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid and aloe vera water will do well for your skin, as it provides long-lasting hydration.

You will notice that adding moisturizer after you exfoliate will give your skin a natural softness in texture. It also locks in moisture.

3) Cleanse Morning and Night

Summer can bring its share of humidity. This can leave your skin feeling and looking greasy. Consider using a clay facial cleanser or micellar water to rid the surface of your skin of dirt, oils, and impurities. Do this both after you wake up in the morning and before you turn in at night.

You could make more time for your cleansing routine to include a traditional lather and rinse cleanse, as well.

4) Add Mattifying Face Mask and Face Scrub to Skin-Care Routine

Your complexion can appear overly oily simply from the accumulation of makeup, dirt, impurities and excess oils. You could add to your weekly beauty routine a mattifying face mask. It would be especially helpful for your skin if it contained different types of clay that is maybe enhanced with an extract like eucalyptus leaf extract. These elements work to extract the buildup of impurities, dirt, and oils, as well as diminish the appearance of excess shine.

5) Protect Your Skin from the Sun

As you are spending more time out in the sun, it is important that you take sun protection measures.  The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) suggests using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or higher as directed.

You also will want to reapply your broad-spectrum sunscreen every couple of hours, and right after swimming or sweating. We also recommend that you limit your time out in the sun, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the sun’s ultraviolet rays are the strongest.

6)     Scale Back on the Makeup

If there was any time of year to go lighter on the makeup, it is the summer.  For example, consider using a luminous, lightweight cream in place of foundation. You want your choice of cream to smooth your skin’s texture and correct the appearance of your skin, producing an even complexion.

Your makeup should also hydrate and hide the skin’s imperfections.

7)     Be Smarter About Showering and Shaving

It’s true all year-round, but even more so in the summer:  avoid razor burn. Make sure to frequently swap out your razor blades, and liberally lather your skin while shaving.

If you want to avoid excessive skin dryness, then take short showers. Long, hot showers tend to be very drying for your skin. You might opt to switching to lukewarm water and finish your shower with a cool rinse to close pores and leave your skin appearing and feeling ultra-smooth.

You could also use a shave-minimizing moisturizer. This gives you the benefit of increasing the effectiveness of your shave.
